Management of Acquisition Programs

Firms frequently engage in acquisition programs to execute their strategy. Rather than executing isolated deals, systematic acquirers often execute streams of mutually interrelated acquisitions aimed at specific strategic targets. For example, during the 1990s, some of the most active acquirers, such as Cisco, General Electric, Microsoft, and several others, engaged in extensive acquisition programs in which they acquired more than 50 companies each. Despite the prevalence of systematic acquirers and the programs they execute, surprisingly few studies have examined the characteristics and performance consequences of active acquisition behavior and our understanding of serial acquisition strategies and the organizational requirements to carry them out successful is quite limited. In this research program, we aim to contribute to a more in-depth understanding of how to manage acquisition programs for growth and profitability.
